This month, Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore celebrates ten years of Joint Law Venture with Clasis LLC in Singapore. The JLV allows the firm to provide an integrated service to clients, with expertise on Singapore law and representation in the Singapore courts, and with advice on multi-jurisdictional transactions and cross-border disputes involving English and Singapore law.
Prakash Pillai, Managing Director, Clasis LLC, comments: “Singapore is a global business hub with a buoyant local legal market. We act on large disputes that have no connection to Singapore, yet the parties choose Singapore as the seat for arbitration in obvious recognition of the strengths that the Republic brings to the table as a hub for cross-border disputes.”
This has enabled Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore to provide advice on cross-border disputes, as well as on corporate and commercial law for clients across a wide range of sectors and services that include aviation, energy and natural resources, insurance and reinsurance, marine, trade and commodities, projects and construction, regulatory and investigations, technology, outsourcing and data, as well as insolvency and reorganisation.
Over the past decade, Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore has successfully represented clients in a large variety of disputes, including proceedings before the Singapore International Commercial Court involving three Mauritian and Indian private equity investment firms and the sale and purchase of about INR 2 billion (S$32.8 million) of shares. Out of Singapore, the firm also advised on a S$30 million trade credit insurance dispute in a Singapore International Arbitration Centre hearing.
Thomas Choo, Managing Partner of Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore, says: “The combination of our international reach and deep local expertise through our joint law venture make for a compelling proposition when advising clients.”
Since April 2022, the firm has added six partners to its Singapore office: Weiyi Tan (corporate investigations and regulatory compliance), Ton van den Bosch (energy, marine and natural resources), Terence Liew (dispute resolution and aviation), Andrew Bicknell (shipping and marine insurance, who transferred from the firm’s London office), and newly promoted partners Vanessa Lim (insurance and reinsurance) and Junxiang Koh (restructuring and insolvency, litigation and arbitration).
Lawyers in the Singapore office work with clients in English and several Asian languages, including Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin. A number of lawyers are dual-qualified, serving clients in jurisdictions including Australia, England and Wales, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, New York, the Netherlands and Singapore.
Prakash Pillai adds: “We set up the Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore Joint Law Venture a decade ago and have never looked back. Over the past ten years, we have been tracking Singapore’s growth as the leading financial centre in Southeast Asia, and a global business hub in the region. We look forward to another decade of growth.”
